Area Amenities / Cost of Living / History The hot springs which bubble forth from the earth at an average of 143 degrees, have been bringing people to this area for thousands of years. Indians were the first to gather at the springs, known as a place of peace, to experience the waters. One of Hot Springs' most famous visitors, Hernando DeSoto marched through the area in 1541 and stayed several weeks to rest and enjoy the springs. The first settlers in the area arrived in 1807, and by 1832 Ludovicus Belding was renting rooms to visitors attracted by the curative powers of the water. Hot Springs became the first National Reservation in 1832 and later became a National Park in 1921. During the early 1900's hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the area to experience the "healing waters". They would return each year, staying several weeks at a time. Many decided to move to Hot Springs permanently, beginning a migration that continues today. The impressive bathhouses of Historic Bathhouse Row stand as monuments to the unique springs and are truly a national treasure. The fully restored Fordyce, the most elaborate of the bathhouses, serves as the National Park's visitor center. The Buckstaff offers the famous traditional hot bath and massage. The remaining bathhouses are currently in a renovation and development program.
